Service departments now have 'clean air' for sale

Six hundred dealers across the country are selling a service that cleans vehicle air conditioning systems. Called DWD2, for Dissolve, Wash, and Disinfect Twice a Year, the process fills the evaporator core with a foam that removes dirt and debris, fungus, mold spores, bacteria, and other contaminants.

The process involves installing a nozzle through which the foam is applied. The nozzle is usually accessible under the dashboard so customers can later apply a refresher treatment on their own. Dealers buy kits, which include nozzles, hoses, adapters, and cleaning solution. Technicians need about 40 minutes of training, which is supplied by the distributor, to learn how to install the nozzles.

Freehold Toyota and Nissan in New Jersey have been selling the 30-minute initial service for a year. Service Director Richard Mootz says the process is particularly popular with people who have allergies and in the summer, although it is just as valuable during the winter heating season.

Since last summer, he has sold 800 services between the two stores. He has not marketed it extensively, but had service advisors approach customers about it. It's an excellent product and an absolute profit opportunity, he says.

The product, which was invented in Japan, is marketed and distributed by DWD2 Success Distribution, Inc., in Anaheim, CA.. Company President Ramiro Moreno says the only alternatives until now has been to remove the evaporator core, which is prohibitively expensive, or use a disinfectant product that coats contaminants rather than removes them.

He says customers often recognize the need for the service because if the systems are left unattended mold and fungus can mix with condensation to create a musty-smelling odor. Service advisors can also explain that the service is similar to having a home's central air conditioning system cleaned.

Or, they could point out the health benefits. This product is about health, says Moreno. And information distributed by the company states: Research has shown that the air conditioning system can be infested with more than a dozen types of fungi that blow into the car through the air vents. In one of the first studies associated with automobile air conditioning systems, a microbiologist at Georgia State University tested the systems in 29 automobiles. The amplification of known allergenic and odor-producing fungi occurred in all 29 systems. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that the cause of most cases of chronic sinus infections is an immune response to fungi. For more information about DWD, call (877) 438-3932.
